ABOUT THE BAND
Tides Will Turn are a punk-infused melodic rock band from Squamish, BC, blending raw energy with sharp songwriting and a fierce DIY ethic. Their self-titled 13-track debut album, recorded between Vancouver’s Warehouse Studio and Squamish’s Sound & Soul Studios, was mastered for vinyl in early 2024 and released to streaming in fall 2025. Formed in 2018 by Matt Chevy (vocals/guitar) and Eric Lightfoot (drums), the band built momentum through 2020–21 with intensive rehearsals and pre-production, ultimately tracking 13 songs in two days at The Warehouse. After bassist Jason Krickler’s departure, Matt and Eric carried the project forward, with the lineup solidifying in 2025 as a powerhouse four-piece featuring Ethan Janky (guitar) and Paul Matthew Hudson (bass). Since their first show at Squamish Punk Fest in 2022, Tides Will Turn have supported acts including Bishop’s Green, The Mahones, Daddy Issues, and Big John Bates, while earning a reputation for passionate, polished live shows that balance grit with precision. Matt Chevy (vocals/guitar): Toronto-born, Matt fuses the textures of Bauhaus, the drive of Social Distortion, and the storytelling grit of Bruce Springsteen, inspired early on by “Bela Lugosi’s Dead.” His style spans punk, surf, and heartland rock. Eric Lightfoot (drums): A multi-instrumentalist who started drumming at five and played in bands from public school age onward before moving out west and founding TWT. He brings experience across a swath of musical territory with experience as a recording arts technician, composer, live concert engineer and session instrumentalist. Ethan Janky (guitar): A Squamish native whose punk roots meet blues improvisation. After playing lead guitar in De Fuca, Ethan joined TWT, bringing a fiery stage presence honed while opening for The Kill Rats, The Subteraliens, Daddy Issues, and Big John Bates. Paul Matthew Hudson (bass): Founder of Squamish Punk Night and member of The SQuNkS and anonymericans, Paul has shared the stage with Canadian punk icons from D.O.A. to Dayglo Abortions, while also collaborating with Scott Middleton (Cancer Bats). With a debut record pressed to vinyl, a growing tour history, and a lineup rooted in the Sea-to-Sky’s thriving scene, Tides Will Turn are carving out their place as one of Western Canada’s most electrifying modern rock bands.
